Restorations
Swift Treadwell & Company,
Inc. offers quality home restorations. Our feature restoration
is of a Memphis area farmhouse and estate.
This weekend/retreat
home and surrounding buildings in Slayden,
Miss., about 30 minutes south of Collierville, was
the subject of a thorough renovation
by Swift Treadwell & Co.
The
Dr. Isham G. Bailey house was first constructed circa 1845
and has been known over
the centuries as “Early
Grove.” It serves as a fine example of a rural
farm estate. Placed on the National Register of Historic
Places
in 2001, it was originally built in two
phases with the second commencing in 1857, just a few
years before
the Civil War. Bricks were formed from clay pits and
fired on the site.
In the main house, we did a wall
to wall restoration, and in the process, original floors
and walls were braced
up
and modernized by our crews. Careful attention was
given to every part of this historical structure, including
the basement which was used as a hospital during the
Civil
War. Our work included new wiring, plumbing, HVAC and
understructure repairs, as well as reproducing many original
details and finishes.
This magnificent farm estate home
takes its place in defining the history of the community.
Its rooms are:
the North
Hall, South Hall, kitchen, dining area, parlor, bath,
southwest bedroom, and southeast bedroom. The flat
arches over the
windows displayed thin white lines in the mortar,
called penciling, to give a refined look.
The 4 panel double doors at the
entrances to the outer hall are reminiscent of the Greek
Revival Period,
but
the transoms and sidelights are unusual.
